In the unconscious, the primal pair Sol and Luna are undifferentiated. Analogous to the Greek nous or Bateson’s field theory, the image presents an interactive tension believed to be complementary and generative. In modern theory, Sol and Luna are given different dress. Clothed in the vocabulary of psychology and physics, Robert Grinnell identifies them as the complementary cerebrospinal and sympathetic nervous systems. The first is defined as having its center in the ego and the external world and the second in internal reality outside the categories of space/time and causality. The first is characterized by focused awareness and the second by liminal awareness.
