As every hero tale has its intruder or serpent, Psyche’s sisters, shadowy precursors to consciousness, provide the intrigue that brings catastrophe and expulsion from paradise. Psyche is persuaded to break the taboo and throw light on her secret lover and as heeding the serpent leads to Adam and Eve’s loss of innocence, listening to the sisters shatters the psychic unity in the unconscious. Neumann notes that by lighting the lamp, Psyche is initiated into the journey toward her own destiny. No longer naive and infantile, captivated and captivating, she moves toward conscious encounter as an equal.
